The year before last we had been visiting my daughter in New Hampshire. They have quite a few chickens and we thought "that would be knid of nice to have fresh eggs". Little did I know how such a small feathered creature could create so much initial work. We planned over the winter for the arrival of our new feathered friends . We bought various chicken how to books to see what breed would best suit our needs. I looked online for suitable housing plans and debated about buying a shed at Home Depot and modifying it. In the end I figured it would be most cost effective and easier to build from scratch rather than trying to modify an existing building. I finally found a plan that was pretty close to what I had in mind and I could work with as a start.
Spring came and we figured that we had to get their housing situation taken care of first. So the building of what a neighbor now refers to as the "Taj Ma Hen house" began. The project took a bit of time and a few weeks into the project our fuzzy little future residents of the Taj came home from the feed store. Now the clock was really ticking. I had to get their house ready for them before the our temporary warm enclosure in the basement was out grown. The house pro ceded OK and the big day came when they were introduced to their new digs. In the end at $2 per dozen when we sell the eggs, we figured we'll break even at about 800 dozen!!
