Here you will find various photos from Milbridge Maine for our family and friends. Included are various before and afters of seemingly un ending "projects". Just looking at them makes me tired all over again!
It all started In November of 2001 we took a long get away weekend and decided to explore the Maine coast. Everybody said "you have to see Camden and Bar Harbor". We stopped by Camden / Rockport but could hardly wait to get out. Pretty, but sorry... a tourist trap. It was early so off we went to Bar Harbor...... Same deal but even more people. We figured "the real Maine has to be out there somewhere". We spent the night in Ellsworth and continued on the next day. As we got past Ellsworth we thought, "this is more like it!" We came down into this little town called Milbridge and it was more like we had imagined Maine should be. We were exploring along the coast down this little road on a point and saw a for sale sign. Couldn't see the house so we continued by to where the road ended overlooking a few islands and the ocean then turned around. As we were passing by the for sale sign again, we went down the driveway. There was a cute little ranch right on the a bay at the ocean's edge with about 12-14 feet of tide. . A little old lady came out and said “let me show you the place”. We said “no thanks we’re not looking for a house, we’re on a long weekend and were just curious”. After she coaxed some more, we took the tour. Once we saw the house and the setting, we then drove our selves crazy the remainder of the weekend. We figured we’d kick ourselves later if we didn’t jump at it. So….. by Monday we made an offer that was accepted. Some people bring back a refrigerator magnet from a weekend trip…. we brought back a house!! We closed on it in December 2001 and had a local lady renting it over that winter. We had figured we’d come up in 3-4 years and I’d just semi retire. The thought was also to work a few days a week at a hardware store or the likes and have some fun and no stress once we moved up.
I got home from work one day in March and said to Paula “what are we waiting for…… let’s go now!”. Why wait until later and hope we make it and have no health issues when we are older. We figured Paula can bring her job (medical transcription) with her as long as she has an internet connection so let's go! I'm doing very selective consulting work on my terms and when I want to and I'm enjoying it.
We love the house and the town is nice and low key. In short, we’re enjoying life! We’re so glad we didn’t wait and went now. Like they say…. “life is not a dress rehearsal so enjoy it now!”
Some saga huh??? We’re about 70 miles south of New Brunswick 300 miles from our previous home in Northern MA / Southern New Hampshire.
We have basically taken the last several years to get the house the way we want it. When we got it, it was stuck in a 1960 time warp complete with green appliances etc. The house projects are decreasing little by little. we've managed to get a bunch of gardens put in. Most of all we like to just sit and watch the tide come and go. In the summer it's Red Sox baseball. Thank heaven for being able to get NESN and pretty much all of the Sox games way up here.
We have loads of wildlife. Lots of seals out front and herons in the summer. When spring arrives the humming birds are also back. We’ve had literally a swarm of them. We have 4 feeders up and have seen a half a dozen or more at a time zooming it and each other at each feeder. We came back one night from dinner and at the end of the bay there were 7 seals, 5 blue herons and our local bald eagle (he is quite often perched in one of our trees…. a HUGE bird!). In short we are SO glad we pulled the plug and came up here. We figure it’s like going on vacation but we don’t ever have to leave to go home at the end since we live here.
